'Guess who I am' #10: what is Frogz? who is Frogz?

People call it Frogz. Who is this frog and what’s it about? I’ve seen it everywhere around the blogosphere for a couple weeks and I still don’t understand its purpose. The frog seems to be traveling the world (was seen in South Korea, and here Marine took a picture of it in Colorado; but she wouldn’t tell the point of taking a picture of the frog). Thanks for your help. As usual, a beer / coffee for the winner. My treat. However, please be specific for me to be able to check when you give this ‘Guess Who I am’ a go because I DON’T KNOW THE ANSWER.

Maybe there is no point? Kind of like 90% of the internet!

Sorry, Jeremy, I don’t know the answer either.

  2. Jeremy Fain says:

I’ve been investigating over and over, and although I suspect Frogz to be at the heart of a buzz marketing campaign coming from a big corporation like Yahoo!, Apple, Google or Microsoft, I still have no clue of what it’s all about. I’ll keep on searching.

  3. Vincent van Wylick says:

Well whatever it is, it appears to be French: http://www.frogz.fr/

So do I get a prize? Btw, for a million-and-1 reasons, I hate viral campaigns. They are disrespectful to the public and often end up being a lot of fluff about nothing. If you have a real product sell it, don’t sell me a stupid animal!

  4. Jeremy Fain says:

    Hey Vince,

No you don’t get a prize: how would you like a frog named Frogz to be born anywhere else than France? I had noticed frogz.fr but it seems your ‘stupid animal’ isn’t French only. It seems very international (I saw pictures all over the Internet about it, pictures of Frogz taken in different areas).

I’m not sure it’s a viral marketing campaign though since it doesn’t seem anyone in particular has created the buzz.

Furthermore, I like the teasing – no matter whether it’s a product or a service. Frogz is hot, everybody’s talking about it although nobody knows what it actually is. Funny, isn’t it? What do you think Vince?

Whatever your answer, I still don’t know what Frogz is and I’m dying to know more about it.

  5. Well the site says, it’s launching October. So I doubt that anyone is going to spill the beans very soon before that. About the nationality, well considering “Frog” was at some point (and perhaps still) a British nickname for the French, perhaps it is from France. In any case, this site, and a French MSN-one, is the first I’ve heard of it.

Maybe it’s a social network for the French? Maybe, god beware, a Microsoft-campaign and you’re in on it? At the moment, my mind is blank, and so is, I imagine everyone elses.

In my experience, buzz campaigns are run if the product/service is entering a saturated market, and are usually not a radical innovation over the existing products/services. That is what I don’t like about these campaigns. In the case of Frogz, I would guess they are trying to gain mind-share, which would lead me to believe it’s some kind of social network. Then again, aren’t all new services coming out…

  6. Vincent van Wylick says:

It would really not surprise me if it was a French Twitter/Pounce/Jaiku competitor.

  7. Kari Silvennoinen says:

This is the first sign of the web2.0-apocalypse. Or the second. Or the third, depends really on how you count it, I guess.

Come on, a web company whose mascot is of bigger interest than the company’s business? Doesn’t it ring any bells? Pets.com, anyone?

Oh, the irony of history repeating itself?

  8. Jeremy Fain says:

Okay Vince, one beer if it turns out to be a French Twitter / Pounce / Jaiku.

Kari> well, the mascot isn’t of bigger interest than the company’s business since we’re precisely trying to get to know what the company does.

  9. Emmanuel Perez-Duarte says:

Apparently some Benjamin Gauthey is either behind it all, or some sort of cover image (the source code of frogz.fr has a couple links to his page). He does present himself as a “Microsoft Enthusiast Evangelist”. Jeremy, are you sure YOU are not behind it all and are trying to amplify the buzz? :)

  10. Jeremy Fain says:

    Hey Manu,

Benjamin is sitting next to me as I’m writing this comment. And he wouldn’t tell me what Frogz is. So the project seems to be indeed a Microsoft project. But I believe it involves a number of other organizations and I don’t know these.

BUT I STILL DON’T KNOW WHAT FROGZ IS. And I can assure you I’m not behind it, and I’m dying to know what Frogz is all about.

  11. Fidji SIMO says:

It is of course a Microsoft project, as this frog reminds me the little duck, Popfly’s mascot.

But no idea either on what the company is doing, sorry! You’ll have to wait Jérémy!
