e-Commerce: eBay accounts for 20% of Deutsche Post’s domestic traffic!!!

Deutsche PostThis is just unbelievable… I just read in the March 2006 release (I’m late, I know) of Logistiques Magazine, a French monthly magazine about supply chain and logistics, in an interview given by Denis Payre, the co-founder of Business Objects and CEO of Kiala, that eBay alone accounted for one fifth of Deutsche Post’s domestic traffic.

This figure is incredible. E-Commerce not only allows for better market efficiencies between people, it has totally changed the way shipping companies operate, from state-owned snail mail to express services.

The interactions between distribution models and supply chain management having been one of my hottest reading and thinking topics for a few years, I’ll try to post more on these, mixing it with e-Business, information systems and the way they have changed the logistics paradigm recently. I just felt with this post that I needed to share the figure with you all. E-Commerce in Germany is big. I guess a lot has changed, positively, at Deutsche Post. But what? how? Any idea how a shipping company may adapt newly adopted e-Commerce habits?

  1. I am not surprised. Ebay in Germany is not only a shop, it is an institution! I don’t know any german people that was never in ebay to sell or buy something.
Ebay is in the culture: “oh, don’t worry I will find it in Ebay” is something that you hear all the time.
And it is the same thing for Amazon.de
With e-commerce becomming more and more important it is also shipping companies that have a big growth. I see big posibilities of new business in this field. Innovation and originality in the shipping business are not so present now, there is a market, it’s sure !
